Gentle Decluttering: 10 Items You Won’t Miss

There is a gentler approach in a world consumed with acquisition and decluttering: gradually leaving behind things of no significance. These items do not bear sentimental, legal, financial or personal consequences. They can be disposed of quickly–much like removing a bandaid. You can gain both momentum and results with a short burst of effort. If you are looking for a quick pick-me-up or a place to start, the following list contains suggestions of things to let go of for immediate satisfaction.

  1. Garbage in the car – bring it in on your next trip to the car or discard while you are out (recycle, if possible!)
  2. Old blankets and towels – these can be washed and donated, especially to pet shelters, used for cleaning or for outside projects
  3. Old photo/picture frames – donate, recycle, give to a neighbour who keeps analog/printed photos, gift or pass along to a classroom teacher or school for art projects
  4. Loose change – enjoy! Add to a piggy bank, roll or use up. Gift to a child saving for something special. Treat yourself to a coffee in change. Tip someone.
  5. Expired/opened/sticky condiments and pantry foods – this will create space, eliminate messes, prevent unwanted visitors and protect your health!
  6. Old throw cushions – ditto on donating to pet shelters, using for outside (garden cushions, knee pads?) or re-covering with new material
  7. Outdated computer peripherals – no, you really aren’t going to need them again. If you ever did, they are available on eBay or Amazon. But you won’t.
  8. Expired/stuck/sticky cleaners – ditto on creating space, eliminating messes and ensuring your cleaning efforts are not in vain.
  9. Shoes that don’t fit – try them on and make a call. You can pass them along to a friend, donate them or try getting them stretched. Just be realistic about investing more money in them.
  10. Items that are broken beyond repair or that you are not going to fix – these might be best suited for recycling or garbage, a disposal drop-off, a handy friend, or a donation bin. Just make sure the goods aren’t dangerous and could actually be repaired by somone.

You do not have to look far for these items or give them much thought. But you will notice the difference and feel better about it! What would you add to the list?

This is great! Even doing one of them will make a grand difference! How about everyone in the house pulls one of them for the job jar.
