How to Get Your Happy On

Tips to Boost Joy:

If February doesn’t exactly conjure up images of happiness and joy, you are not alone. The ‘new’ of the New Year has worn off, and it gets dark too early for most. The evenings are noticeably shorter than in December, and the sun rises earlier. But if you are seeking to either get or maintain some ‘happy’ momentum, here are a few ideas:

  1. Define happiness. What does happiness mean to you? This is crucial in determining what feelings and sensations you are looking for and remembering when you last experienced them. Think of all your senses. What does happiness feel like? Look like? Sound like? Taste like?
  2. Consider different areas of your life. How would you describe happiness Emotionally, Physically, Mentally, and Spiritually? You might also consider Financially, Relationally and Purposefully.
  3. Describe other emotions that make you feel happy. Would you say joy or contentment? What about love, safety or abundance? Make a list. The more emotions you can connect with the feeling of happiness, the more ways you might be able to get there.
  4. Ask yourself questions. Take some time in the morning to ask yourself, “What would make me happy today?” Is there anything within your control that you can think of or do to increase your chances? In the evening, ask yourself, “What made me happy today?” Is there an aspect of the day that you can repeat tomorrow?
  5. Reflect upon your needs. Think of the different areas of your life and what your needs are in those areas. Is there a way you can meet your needs that does not depend on someone else or external circumstances? Who in your life could help you meet a need?
  6. Make someone else happy! Connect with a friend, do a kind deed or compliment someone.
